HOW TO ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE

HOW TO ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The Global Climate Strike is happening right now (20 – 27 September), did you know about it?!

More than in 150 countries people took the streets, demanding their governments take urgent steps to tackle the climate crisis and prevent an environmental catastrophe. Millions of children don’t go to school, parents don’t go to work so they can make their voice heard and fight for their future. Fight for our future.

The demonstrations started in the Pacific Islands before quickly getting started across Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and North and South America.

Protesters say “We are not striking, we are fighing.”

Organisers estimated 300,000 people turned up for the “global climate strike” in Australia, the world’s largest exporter of coal and liquid natural gas.

We are already hurting from the impacts of climate change. If we don’t act now to transition fairly and swiftly away from coal, oil and gas to 100% renewable energy for all, this will only get worse. But it’s going to take all of us working together to succeed.

Your impact on climate change primarily comes from what you eat, how you power your home and mobile devices, and how you travel from place to place.

Let‘s see how can you act on climate change:

1.  JOIN THE STRIKE

Find a climate strike near you and join the movement.

2. GET INFORMED AND RAISE AWARENESS

Knowledge is power – learn more about climate change and the responsibility that all sectors hold in addressing the issue. Add your voice to the issues that are shaping the climate debate, share informations on social media or just with your friends, family.

3. TAKE CARE OF YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Did you know that you can easily calculate your carbon footprint?!

It‘s a big help for everyone. If you can measure it, you can manage it!

Eat less meat or cut it completely out of your diet, drive less, don’t buy fast fashion, eat locally, use less energy, etc.

4. UNPLUG

Use your energy more efficiently at home! You can reduce your carbon footprint by unplugging devices you have at home that you’re not using.

Always-on appliances ― which includes devices in “sleep” or “standby” mode ― account for 23% of the average household’s power consumption.

All you have to do to change that is unplug. Using a power strip is an easy way to unplug numerous devices at once.

5. TRAVEL SMARTER

Transportation is probably the largest source of carbon emissions. Traveling by car or airplane contributes heavily to our shared carbon footprint.

If you are visiting countries that are not so far away, consider to go by bus instead of a plane. It can mean 55% to 75% fewer emissions than flying.

If you travel within your hometown, consider to go by walk, by bicycle or by public transport instead of going everywhere by car. It’s good for your health, your wallet, and the planet.

6. USE ENERGY WISELY

By becoming more energy-efficient, you not only pollute less but save money too.

Change to energy-efficient light bulbs, wash clothes in cold or warm water instead of hot water, hang-dry your clothes when you can, when shaving or washing up, fill the sink half-way instead of letting the water run, take showers instead of baths, etc.

7. GET POLITICALLY ACTIVE AND VOTE

Although it’s important to take action to reduce our individual carbon footprints, we also need to focus on changing the larger system. That’s where we have the greatest opportunity to reduce emissions.

Vote for leaders at all levels of government who take climate change seriously.

Remember, everyone has the power to make a difference! You are part of the solution.
