PLASTIC POLLUTION - WHY IS IT A BIG PROBLEM?!

READING LIST FOR OCEAN LOVERS Reading PLASTIC POLLUTION - WHY IS IT A BIG PROBLEM?! 3 minutes Next THE CRAZY IDEA - PLANTABLE HANGTAGS!

By 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight. It is quiet scary, isn’t it?

Plastic pollution and climate change are parallel global emergencies and we must reduce our collective plastic footprint until we can! We believe if we fight together we can still heal our seas.

But why we need to take action?!

First of all, you have to know that plastic never goes away!

Plastic is a material made to last forever, yet 43 % of all plastic used just once and thrown away. Plastic cannot biodegrade, it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces and finds a way to toxic everything in its way.

Lately, we are producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year and half of them are for single use. More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. But nobody thinks of that 50-85% of the oxygen we breath is produced by marine plants. 97% of the Earth’s water supply is contained in the ocean. Plastic is our biggest enemy as it poisons our food chain and slowly kills our nature. In the end, everything suffers: the health of humans, animals, tourism, recreation, business and the nature— because of plastic pollution.  If the ocean isn’t healthy, neither are we.

What is single use plastic?

Single-use plastics are used only once before they are thrown away. These items are things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, water bottles and most food packaging.

When we use single-use plastics, we have to face its consequences. We cannot just escape the consequences of throwing away vast quantities of a material that takes hundreds of years to break down. Our planet is not as large as we think it is. We now share it with 7 billion people, the majority of whom are producing plastic waste at an alarming rate.

We have to stop our single-use mentality, use less (!!!) plastic, move towards sustainable products and services, and come up with technology that recycles plastic more efficiently.

Sadly, so far only 10% of plastic items are recycled around the world. It means, recycling efforts need to be increased considering the amount of waste disposed of every day.

People need healthy oceans to survive and to thrive!

Bother to save our Mother Nature!
